According to a survey commissioned by the Patients Association, millions of people in the UK have had problems arranging care for their elderly relatives. It showed that around 2.5 million people in the UK have had to take time off work to arrange suitable short-term post-hospital care for older relatives, despite government efforts to improve the system.
Care packages are supposed to be put in place by the hospitals along with social services to ensure that there is post-operative support for the patients.
This survey showed that the responsibility of ensuring the care package is actioned, often falls upon working relatives.
Our view
It is estimated that in 30 years, over 1.5m will need care, this is double what we have at the moment. Government need to plan to ensure the right infrastructure is in place to deal with the ageing population.
