National Care Service Plan in ‘Old Age’

The Government has revealed plans to try an solve the ongoing and ever increasing problems of care in the UK.

Current position:

  • Medical or Nursing Care i.e.  your medicine is free to all
  • Social Care (i.e.  living in the care home, food etc) is means tested.

In short, if you are worth more than £23,000 including you home, you will have to pay for your own social care, which can be thousands of pounds each month.  The proposed ‘National Care Service’ debate on funding has begun with the Government suggesting that care provision for the elderly and disabled needs to be completely rebuilt.

Care Fees Insurance
One of main solutions suggested is that people are encouraged to take out care fees insurance policies.

State Scheme there is also a suggestion that if you make a lump sum payment to the Government when you reach state retirement for say £20,000 then all your fees with then be taken care of.

Our view

Care fees insurance, alongside making pension saving more attractive is the only solution to an ageing population and the care fees debate.  There is no other solution as there will not be enough young people working to pay taxes to fund state care as we are an ageing population.
