Land Registry Removes Online Deeds

Published / Last Updated on 12/12/2007

Risk of fraud

The Land Registry has removed online access to scanned documents after it admitted the online system was susceptible to fraud.  To acquire information, you now have to apply in writing.  Concerns were raised that the information contained in the system, such as Mortgage Deeds, could be accessed by fraudsters to obtain remortgages without the home owners’ consent.

Mike Westcott-Rudd, head of Corporate Legal Services said “Fraud within the system was very rare and if someone has been a victim of fraud they have a comprehensive compensation scheme in place to put things right”.

Our view

It would appear logical for the Land Registry to take such an action to protect us all and we welcome it.
