An independent think tank, The New Local Government Network has called for an incentive to encourage homeowners to consider going green, buy installing solar panels and wind turbines.
They are seeking a council tax rebate scheme if you have these energy efficient products installed. Although the government has proposed a 30per cent grant, the New Local Government Network, did not think that this was enough to encourage people and have suggested councils introduce loans for the equipment, which would be repaid over the lifetime of the products.
Our view
We are totally for this move, the way to encourage is either use ‘a carrot or a stick’, at this stage we suggest incentives rather than tax penalties on those who do not comply. Being greener is here to stay, and in time it will add value to your home.
