Government to Keep Stake in Banks?

Chancellor, Alastair Darling, has suggested that any part-nationalised bank that the Government has helped should continue to be owned by shareholder investors as well as the government.

In an article in the FT, he suggests that retaining State ownership interest “will make it easier for current and future investments in these banks to be returned to full commercial operation,"

Darling also said the details of the Government’s asset protection scheme to help companies meet their funding costs.

The Bank of England has begun purchasing high-quality private sector assets that companies use to finance their business.  T his will free up markets and help companies meet their funding needs at lower cost, the Chancellor suggested.
