The Government has been well and truly slated at a recent industry forum surrounding savings and pensions.
According to a number of commentators, the last thing the Government wants the British public to do at the moment is save into a pension. Instead, it would seem that the Government want to encourage spending over saving to boost the economy on the run-up to the next general election.
Our View
Sadly, we have to agree. With the masses of new pension simplification measures being implemented in 2006, we should be believing that the Government is promoting saving. But, if it is growth in the UK economy they want, in order to look good on the books for the next election, it could all have been a very expensive cover-up to actually dissuade us from saving.
