Rumours are suggesting that Abbey National’s consumer credit business, First National, is on the market.  It is rumoured that the bank is asking for an estimated £800 million for the business, although Abbey National has refused to comment on the speculations.  The sale is said to be handled by Abbey National’s adviser, Morgan Stanley and potential bidders include Lloyds TSB and Barclays.  First National made profits of £92 million last year and it has been rumoured that the business has been on the market for some time.
