At the recent TUC conference, Tony Blair admitted that there was no easy solution to the pensions problem in the UK. He also added that the State Pension and Labours approach to Guaranteed income for poorer pensioners was assured.
Our view
Point 1 - the State Pension is a statutory requirement (i.e. it is the law). There would be some voting losing if they tried to change the law on this.
Point 2 - the guarantees whilst nice actually contribute to the problem. Why is the Government rewarding those who do not actually bother to save for their retirement?
More bonuses should be given to those that do save. The reality is that there is too much wastage in Government departments and local authority and public bodies.
