Research based on Neighbourhood Watch residents and a Post Office Home Insurance survey, have found that millions of people in the UK no longer know their neighbours, and four in ten women don't feel safe walking on their own at night.
One third of people are worried about the extent of yob culture and anti-social behaviour in their communities and nearly sixty per cent of people believe crime levels are rising.
The National Neighbourhood Watch Association considers that the study reflects the true concerns of Britain today, with antisocial behaviour and personal safety at the top of the list. They also believe that getting to know your neighbours helps make communities safer.
Our view
It is a sad indictment of Society today that we do not know our neighbours as we all sit in our homes watching children throw bottles and smoke cannabis! Countries that have strong family values such as Spain and Italy do not have these same problems.
