The public sector union, UNISON, has warned that budget cuts are forcing Local Authorities to make a choice between delivering a high quality service, and paying staff equally. A report submitted to the Women and Work Commission, has called for a closure in the pay gap, stating that the cost of equalising pay between men and women within Local Government would be around two billion. This problem is not only in Local Government. Women still earn on average, 18% less than men, with the figure rising, for part time workers, to 42%.
