UK Long Working House Culture

Published / Last Updated on 22/06/2005

According to the Trade Unions Congress, the UK's long working hours culture is bad for family life, and reinforces the gender pay gap.

Women have to juggle paid work with caring responsibilities, while their partners work the longest hours in Europe.  They believe that all employees should have the right to request flexible working hours if they are to achieve a better balance, and that the right to reduce or change hours should be given to all carers and parents of children under 18, along with improved maternity and paternity leave.

Our view

Of course working too hard can be bad for us all but how can you tell a person who is trying to provide for themselves and their family that they should work less.  The UK is a huge 'rat race'.
