HMRC Issues Tax Scam Warning As Tax Season Approaches

HMRC has issued a tax scam warning to the public ahead of self assessment tax return season in January 2022.

It reports that were 800,000 tax related scams recorded in the last year including 360,000 fake tax refund claims.

HMRC’s warning suggests that people should be aware and alive to the fact that there will be hundreds of thousands of scam emails, texts and telephone calls over the coming months.

You would be amazed at how many clients contacted us last year having received fake tax rebate notifications.  HMRC does not issue tax refund notifications by basic email.  It will send an email asking you to log into your personal tax account and even then you will also be sent an SMS access code text to enable another layer of checking. 

In addition, do not click on the links in an email use search engines to find that right page to log into your account.  Many email scams also include fake links that look real.
