Clearly, the current tax year has already started and many people will already be in receipt of this year's tax credits. If you fail to renew your tax credit entitlement, HMRC will be obliged to ask you to refund all tax credits that they have paid to you in the current tax year.

If you are not entitled to tax credits then you should tell HMRC as soon as possible and refund any payments received.

If you are entitled to tax credits and you miss the deadline of 31 July, HMRC will still potentially ask for a refund of tax credits paid and you will be required to complete a full tax credit application claim again rather than the simpler renewal format.
