Scotland Old Age Care System Fairer

Published / Last Updated on 01/03/2006

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation have claimed that Scotland’s policy of providing free personal care for older people at home and in residential and nursing homes has created a fairer system without too much extra public spending.

Researchers from the University of Sterling, who organised group discussions with older people and their relatives, believe that free personal care at home had helped informal carers by allowing them more time to carry out other, less hands-on support tasks.

Our view

We tend to agree with this research although it has limited impact.  The big question hanging over the whole of this country is caring for us all.  We are ageing and the Government cannot sustain care without placing a greater degree of the costs back with the public.
