Record High Evictions

Record High Evictions.

A record high number of people and families being evicted were seen in 2013. Figures from the Ministry of Justice showed that following court action 37,739 private and public sector tenants saw their homes repossessed by bailiffs.

This is the highest number of people being evicted since 2000. However the figures show the amount of homes being repossessed by mortgage lenders was at its lowest point for a decade.

The reason why more people are being evicted is hard to pin point, it could be that more people are renting or that landlords are taking action via courts to help them with evicting tenants.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that the cost of renting rose but only slightly. However rent rises in London may have outpaced wage rises.
