Public Sector Wages Higher than Private

Public Sector Wages Higher than Private.

The Office for National Statistics has reported that on average public sector workers were paid 14.5% more than those in private sector jobs in 2013. This meant on average public sector workers were earning £16.28 per hour while private workers were earning £14.16 per hour.

Reasoning behind this is that public sector jobs require higher and different skill sets as well as university degrees. Also public sector workers usually work for a much bigger firm meaning higher wages.

After removing any variables such as age, firm size, experience etc, the ONS found that private sector jobs actually came out on top for 2013. This calculated to private sector jobs being higher than public sector by between 1.3% and 2.4%.

The results however do not take into account overtime pay and any company benefits such as health insurance and car hire. If you would like to see the data collected by the ONS please visit here.
