Pension Funds Can Still Buy Property

Published / Last Updated on 29/12/2004

EU Directives that looked set to stop UK Small Self Administered Schemes (SSAS) and Self Invested Personal Pensions (SIPPs) from buying commercial property using loans look set to be scrapped or at least only larger schemes being affected.

Our view

Many business people use their pension funds to help them develop their businesses such as the pension fund buying a shop or building a factory.  Just because our EU partners are "light years" behind the UK financial services market - why should they restrict the entrepreneurs of this country.

Napolean called us a "nation of shopkeepers", this we are not - but we are the country that delivers over 95% of all the World's new inventions and have the largest proportion of entrepreneurs running their own business.

This is very welcome news as it provides a source for additional capital when needed.
