Paying For Old Age Care Call For Changes

Published / Last Updated on 28/04/2005

The Health Select Committee has proposed changes to the way care is funded in retirement.  The present system has resulted in the burden of paying for care being shifted from the NHS to local authorities and individual patients and their families.

The recommendations call for a national basis for eligibility, to end the situation where people in different parts of the country with the same needs were entitled to different levels of care. It also recommended that care be supplied according to dependency, rather than on the basis of the conditions that individuals suffered.

The committee also made the recommendation that the government remove the distinction between health care, which is provided for free, and the system for social care, which is means tested or paid for by the individual.
