Online Holiday Sales Boom.
The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has said that a record number of online purchases were made in December 2013. Online sales for non-food items grew 19.2% compared with the year before, this was the highest growth in 4 years.
We reported earlier this week that the UK economy had seen a confidence boost and this showed in the amount of online spending that was seen. The BRC’s director general Helen Dickinson said that retailers were doing their bit to improve their websites as well as the stores. Delivery times and social media were also a key factor in people being able to get everything they had planned for Christmas.
Almost 1 in 5 items sold over the Christmas period was bought online. With people showing it was a lot similar to click a button than brave the high street.
Supermarkets had also struggled against growing competition with updates from Tesco’s and Morrisons proving this. Morrisons said their lack of online presence had hit their sales figures hard.
