Research by Prudential has found that one in five financial directors of companies are frightened of future liabilities and strains on their business by offering final salary pension schemes.
The figures show that many companies are facing real pressure in making up deficits on their schemes.
In simple terms, many pension schemes are technically "overdrawn" i.e. there are not enough assets in the pension scheme to cover their liabilities.
Our view
Given that pension funds are still struggling with poor investment returns as well as more people retiring, these results are no shock. Headline grabbing only!
