More Over 50's Working

Published / Last Updated on 21/02/2005

Figures from the Office of National Statistics have shown that the employment rate for people aged 50 and over, has steadily increased since 1993.  The employment rate for men who are aged 50+, increased from 38% in 1992, to 44% in 2004.   For women, the rate has risen from 23% to 30%.

Suggested reasons for the increase include, changes in educational levels, changes in earnings, the shift from manufacturing to the service-sector, more people over 50 from an ethnic background in the work-force, and marital status.

Our view

This is good news.  Certainly, here are we consider all ages for employement opportunities and recognise that the over 50's have years of experience that would be wasted unless they are given the chance.  You cannot buy experience.
