Missed Tax Credit Deadline Low.
HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) has reported that nearly half a million people missed the deadline for renewing their claims for tax credits. Those who missed the deadline could now face their tax credit payments being stopped.
This is the lowest recorded number of people who have missed the deadline. In addition to the postal claim service, the new online renewal service provided claimants being able to renew their claim online without having to send forms to HMRC.
Claimants must fill out an annual renewal form to tell HMRC if there are changes to working hours, costs of childcare or pay to allow HMRC to calculate payments accordingly.
Over 3 million people managed to get their renewals in before the deadline with the most popular way of doing this being by post. 1.3 million people sent their renewals using the postal service and only 390,000 using the new online renewal service.

It is good news that people are clearly getting better information about tax credits and taking responsibility to make a claim.
