Means Test Winter Fuel Benefits.
Liberal MP Paul Burstow has suggested in a report that the winter fuel benefit payable to pensioners should be means tested.
His report suggests that savings on nearly £2bn could be made which may then be used to subsidise elderly social care.
Our view
Simple and makes sense. We have never understood why the winter fuel benefit is paid. It is even paid to some pensioners that live overseas in Spain. Do expats living in warmer climates really need winter fuel money for heating?
