Landlords 'Registration' Act Worries

Published / Last Updated on 10/05/2006

Following Government advertising on changes to the Housing Act, the Association of Rental Letting Agents has claimed that their staff had been inundated with calls from anxious landlords.  The advertising implied that all landlords and their properties should be licensed.

In fact, only some houses in multiple occupation (HMO's) and their landlords will need licences by 6th July.  This licensing is to cover shared homes, student properties and bedsits.

Our view

Expect more legislation in England to tighten up regulations on landlords, much as they are already doing in Scotland where basically all have to register.
