Houses Remortgaged For University Fees?

Published / Last Updated on 23/01/2004

The NOP (a opinion poll research agency) has issued warnings that parents are placing their homes at risk to pay for university fees.

As the Government has just revealed its plans for people paying for university fees, the estimated costs are in the region of £23,150 now for a three year course rising to £36,100 in 18 years!

These projected costs are staggering.  The research showed that over one third of parents woud happily consider re-mortgaging to cover these costs!

Our view

This is a worrying response.  Borrowing by re-mortgage can be a very expensive way to fund university, or indeed, any other schooling costs over the long terms.  If you have children or plan to have children you really do need to make plans now.

The technical team at has just this week written a special computer program to work out how much you would need to save on a regular basis to cover such costs.  Tell us how old your children are and we will do the rest.
