Home Information Packs To Increase Council Tax

Published / Last Updated on 02/09/2007

The Conservative Party believe that the introduction of home information packs and the information that they will collect, will be used to increase the council tax bill.

Information exchange deals have already been agreed between the Valuations Office, who are in charge of the council tax revaluation, the Land Registry and Rightmove. Details of homes for sale will be logged on to a national database and by the year 2010 it is estimated that details of 10 million homes will be stored there.

Our view

Political spin. Local authorities will only increase local taxes based upon the revenue that they need and what the government subsidies are. We appreciate that it may allow them to tax more accurately based upon up to date valuations rather than valuation ‘rates’ set years ago.
