HMRC Closes VAT Registration Helpline

Published / Last Updated on 17/05/2023

HMRC has issued a notice to interested parties that with effect from Monday 22nd May 2023 their VAT Registration Helpline will be closed permanently.

This does mean that all VAT Helplines are closing, it is just the registration helpline.

Last year, HMRC conducted a trial closing certain helplines for a day per week to monitor any improvements in processing new applications or dealing with existing registration issues.

It found that the 85% of all to the VAT registration helpline were from customers who wanted an update on the progress of their application and by periodically turning lines off, they managed to process an additional 4,000 items of post to clear backlogs.

The update service will not ‘die’ though, HMRC has built a “Where’s My Reply” tool to offer you an expected response date.

HMRC suggests that all queries can expect a reply within 40 working days and that new applications that have been submitted within 40 working days should not contact HMRC.
