Help The Aged

Published / Last Updated on 19/03/2003

Following the Government's Green Paper on pensions reform, Help the Aged have announced details of their campaign to fight poverty for pensioners.

According to the charity, 2 million pensioners are living in poverty and need help from the Government.  Almost a third of pensioners are not claiming benefits that they are entitled to, such as income support and Help the Aged believe that the Government should target people with what they are entitled to.

The charity would also like to see an increase to the basic state pension, especially for those over 80 years of age.  Currently, once you reach 80 you can earn an extra 25pence per week.  Help the Aged think an extra £5 per week would be better!

Our view:

State pensions questionably provide you with a subsistence standard of living.  Look after yourself by saving a little whilst you can.  The Welfare State is in no position to provide for you and the outlook for the future is worse.
