Green Eco Friendly Homes Too Expensive

Research by Norwich and Peterborough Building Society has revealed that while 89 per cent of people support the Government’s plans to make all new homes zero carbon by 2016, many will not make green changes to their own homes because of the perceived cost.

The research showed that 81 per cent would be willing to incorporate green features into homes they build themselves, but 19 per cent would not and nearly half of those people said it was because items such as solar panels and wind turbines were too expensive.

Our view

There are two things that prohibit people looking at improving existing homes to be greener:

  • Lack of knowledge of what we can do - we all need educating
  • Costs – if the Government wishes to encourage us they need to offer tax incentives, for example removing VAT off environmental and energy efficient home improvements
  • Discounts on council tax for ‘green’ homes
