A BBC programme, The Truth About Property, claimed that one in 30 properties in the UK was currently sitting empty. To plug the gap between demand and supply, the government is pledging to create three million homes by 2020, but it has been claimed that the stock already exists and only needs to be redeveloped.
Empty Homes Agency have said “there are around 840,000 empty homes in the UK at the moment, mainly because owners who can’t afford to put them right and are now in an uninhabitable condition and also people invest in property and leaving them empty still makes them an income.
Our view
We already believe that the Government target is too high and will fail. We suggest that they will include ‘brown land’ development and possibly force compulsory purchase orders on property that is derelict.
