FTSE Falls Japan Radiation Fear.

Following a third explosion at the Fukushima nuclear power plant, which let off a radioactive cloud, posing a health risk to the population, the FTSE experienced a triple-digit loss in trade.  London’s leading index was 2.52 per cent lower at 5,629.  Japan’s Nikkei 225 fell by 10.55 per cent, the broader Topix index fell 9.5 per cent.  

Other markets were also affected by the news, Korea’s main Kospi index was 2.4 per cent lower by the end of the day, while Australian shares fell 2.1 per cent to their lowest close in over six months.  Taiwan suffered their biggest drop in 13 months, finishing down 3.4 per cent.  In the US, the Dow Jones closed more than 50 points lower at 11,993.
