Families Financial Strain.

The housing charity Shelter conducted a survey which found that 3.8 million families could only afford to pay their mortgage/rent if they lost their jobs.

Shelter used a poll of 7,500 adults conducted by YouGov and found that families with young children with little to no savings could lose their home after the last pay cheque.

Shelter wants the government to step in and give extra short term support.

The government already gives support using the housing benefit. The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) spends £94bn a year on benefits to give support to those with low incomes or no job.

Citizens Advice said that they had seen an increase in the number of those in housing rent arrears by 16% and also a rise in repossessions.
