European Sick Pay 6 X UK.
It is pertinent that in a week that we started a Sickness Insurance video campaign series this week, a report by financial industry newspaper Cover Magazine has found that the average state sick pay per week in Europe is £245 pwk compared to the UK average pay out of £35.96 pwk. In some circumstances, some countries can received up to 100% of their salary in state supported sick for a short period whereas in the UK the maximum Statutory sick pay (SSP) is £88.45 pwk for a maximum period of 28 weeks.
Comments
Many complain that the UK sits in the lower leagues for statutory sick pay rates. The reality is we pay substantially lower social security rates and our benefits system overall is too generous. Some countries have to pay for medical treatment, in the UK we have the NHS. Therefore, we would not decry UK for having lower sick pay just because others get more. “It’s swings and roundabouts”.
That said, it makes you realise that if your employer is not a large one and does not offer a sickness insurance scheme, you really should consider setting up your own income protection insurance.
