European Markets Review

Published / Last Updated on 18/01/2002

Monday's trends in the UK were followed by the rest of Europe - losses for oil, telecommunications and banking stocks.  Again, corporate earnings news from the US seemed to extend the losses.

European markets also saw a reversal of fortune on Tuesday with gains for technology, telecommunications and oil stocks.  The main gainer was the Paris CAC index which saw a gain of 1.5% for the day.

Wednesday saw banking and technology stocks take a tumble across Europe and the worse than expected industrial production figures from the US did not help.

Thursday saw indices back in the black with gains across the usual sectors of technology, telecommunications and banking.  By close of play, the German DAX was up 2.5% and the Paris CAC 40 was up by over 1%.

Friday saw another downward close for European markets. The pan-European FTSE Eurotop 100 index closed slightly down for the day but over 1.5% down for the week.  Both the German DAX and the Paris CAC 40 were lower for the day by over 0.5%. Plenty of yo-yoing this week.
