Energy Firms Refund Households.

An estimated 3 million households may be able to claim back money owed to them by the six big energy suppliers. The regulator Ofgem ordered the energy suppliers to pay back the money after it was found that they have accumulated £153m which has been left unclaimed by customers.

Most of this amount was a result of customers changing suppliers or moved home and not left a forwarding address. Energy suppliers are stepping up measures to ensure something like this doesn’t happen again on such a large scale.

This comes after an investigation by Ofgem into the big six energy suppliers and in February the regulator told suppliers to take care of some key issues such as returning money to customers that are owed it and using balances that cannot be returned in a positive way to avoid this issue in the future.
