Easing Inheritance Tax Burden

Published / Last Updated on 22/09/2006

The secretary for trade and industry Alastair Darling has hit out at a call for the abolition of Inheritance Tax.

Mr Darling commented that the abolition of Inheritance Tax did not make a “prudent or sensible tax and spend policy”.

The Conservatives hit back by saying they would put economic stability before looking to cut taxes. But, they did want to look at ways of lowering the Inheritance Tax burden.

Our view

Inheritance Tax is one of the better-known taxes and more and more people have fallen into its grasp. The main parties all have it high on their agendas but the Tories have picked this up as an easy crowd-puller but not given any concrete plans.
