Council Housing Demands

Council Housing Demands.

Local councils across England and Wales are demanding half a million new homes to be built by the end of the decade. These authorities are not happy at the current shortage of affordable housing.

The Local Government Association (LGA) represents 370 councils across England and Wales and wants a wave of new measures to fight the housing crisis. Latest figures show that every year a further 221,000 new homes are needed to accommodate a growing population.

 The new measures include:

  • New incentives for private developers to speed up building processes that already have planning permission
  • New local land trusts that would allocate publicly owned land for house building
  • A removal of the cap that limits the amount councils can borrow to build new homes
