Conservatives Want More State Pensions

Published / Last Updated on 25/11/2002

Speaking at a National Pensioners' Convention, the shadow secretary for work and pensions restated his party's intention to increase State pension benefits for older pensioners.

Mr Willetts then went on to say that pensioners faced losing their dignity when having to claim means tested benefits under the current Labour Government.  The question is, are there proposals in place to actually do this and, if so, where is the extra money going to come from.

The UK State pension is on a knife-edge and as people live longer and have longer in retirement, the problem can only get worse.

However, any proposals would be welcomed, we are sure, by all people currently claiming the State pension.  For people not yet claiming the State pension the message is clear.   Look after yourself if you want to make sure of a poverty free retirement.
