British Gas Fined.

In the same week in which it was found that energy companies were going to be investigated following a discovery of money still being owed to customers, British Gas has been issued with a fine and ordered to pay compensation.

The energy regulator Ofgem found that the energy supplier blocked businesses from changing supplier and failure to notify firms that they were approaching their contract end.

British Gas has since apologised about the error and have been told they must pay £1.3m in compensation to those affected, £3.45m into an energy efficiency fund and an £800,000 penalty.

Businesses who wanted to change providers were objected by British Gas, but with no reason given of the objection or how the customer could get the issue fixed. The occurrences took place between 2007 and 2012.
