Those approaching retirement and suffering from conditions such as high blood pressure, obesity and asthma are among around 1000 medical conditions that now qualify for enhanced annuity rates.
In some cases, these conditions can boost retirement rates by up to 25% for those taking a pension at 65. The annuity market is worth over £7.4 billion a year yet research by Just Retirement suggested that only 15% of people nearing retirement thought that they would be eligible for enhanced annuity, because very few know about the enormous range of conditions that will allow them to claim.
