According to a recent survey by Scottish Provident, people in the UK don't have enough life insurance, should the worst happen.
Only 44% of people questioned had any form of death cover and only 19% had cover in the event of serious illness.
Scottish Provident commented: "While people want to enjoy a high standard of living, they are not facing up to the financial responsibilities that come with ensuring that it happens"
Another survey highlighted that 35% of people in Britain worry about not being able to meet their financial commitments in the next three months.
Worries over meeting mortgage repayments accounted for 33% of respondents.
Our View
Pure life insurance is generally very cheap and at least some cover can be obtained from about £5 per month. People need to assess how their standards of living would be affected, should the worst happen.
Serious illness cover is a little more expensive because people are six times more likely to suffer illness than death.
Protecting your income through illness or long term incapacity can also be relatively cheap, depending on how much your monthly outgoings are, and if you want to include additional cover.
