According to research from the Halifax, almost 2.3 million people have moved away from the capital to head for the South East, and the West Country over the last 10 years. Between 1994 and 1998, population loss from London was only 230,000 compared to 440,000 five years later. The total loss between 1994 and 2004 was 670,000, which is 9% of the population of London.
Our view
With the advance of technology and communications, people can be just as effective working in the Outer Hebrides. More and more are opting for less of the rat race. It is far pleasanter to be at your desk in minutes rather than hours.
