1.2m Owe Tax HMRC Error.
HMRC will be issuing underpayments to around 1.2 million people who have underpaid tax in the 2010/11 tax year, with the average underpayment being between £500 - £600. Around 160,000 people who received the basic state pension for the first time in the 2010/11 tax year could be affected.
HMRC will also be issuing between 1.7m to 3.5m repayments of around £340 per person in the next few weeks.
A spokesman for HMRC has claimed that the new computer system is working fast and efficiently and the greater accuracy it has delivered will reduce both over and underpayments in future years.
