Women Lose State Pension Age Appeal

Published / Last Updated on 15/09/2020

Senior Judges have dismissed an appeal today 15th September 2020 from 2 women affected by the state pension age changes.

The judgement said, “introducing the same state pension age for men and women did not amount to unlawful discrimination”.

Last year Julie Delve 62 and Karen Glynn 63 where backed by BackTo60 campaign group and challenged the changes after losing a High Court battle against the Department for Work and Pensions last year.

Campaigners have said: “the fight is not over”.

Campaign groups associated with the court case represent nearly 4 million women who have been affected by the government’s decision to increase the state pension age to 66 from 60.

Comment

Many of the women are on low incomes and are facing financial hardship because of the change.  Likewise though, men live shorter lives and thus usually claim less in state pensions and even more so with a gap of 60 and 65.  Equally, equal rights for men and women.  There is no easy answer to this but people have been aware of the changes now for nigh on 20 years so plans could have been made on both sides.
