  • 3 months late: £10 per day for each day it is late up to a maximum of £900 i.e., 90 days.
  • 6 months late there are more penalties at the greater of 5% of the tax due or £300.
  • 12 months late, another penalty at the greater of 5% of the tax due or £300
  • More 5% penalties in year 2 at 30 days, six months, and 12 months.
  • Later than that and you are going to court.

Comment

There is no excuse for filing late returns.  We already have nearly 10 months between end of the tax year 5th April and the following 31 January to file our self assessment returns.  Even if you are in trouble and worried you can contact HMRC, Citizens Advice or a tax specialist such as us to help you.
