How Do You Read The Financial Papers? Share prices are listed in a number of financial papers and one of the main ones is in the Financial Times which is marked 'London share service' - but what does it all mean? Use our quick guide help you. 

All the above named companies are fictitious and are not meant to resemble or reflect any company trading.

Notes - there are various symbols that are coded at the end of the listings e.g. "  indicates an interim dividend has been paid since the increase or decrease. Price - The price is in pence unless shown. The price is the mid-market price of the previous day. +or - - The increase or decrease on the previous days price. High and Low - The highest and lowest price for the last 52 weeks. Volume '000s - The number of shares traded (bought or sold) during the previous day. Yield - This is the income (dividend) from the share divided by the share price as a %. P/E - The price earnings ratio. Price of the share divided by the income (dividend) from it - in simple terms it is approximately the number of years it would take you to recoup your outlay to buy a share from the income generated. A high P/E may indicate the market expects profits (i.e. income to grow).
