Tories Woo First Time Buyers

Published / Last Updated on 14/11/2007

Under a Conservative Government, stamp duty on properties under £250,000 would be removed for first time buyers.

The Conservative party believes that the average first time buyer now pays £1675 in stamp duty compared to 1997 when it was zero.  Mr George Osborne, Shadow Chancellor believes that these proposals would help first time buyers onto the property market.

Our view

Stamp duty changes should be welcomed, as stamp duty rates and allowances have not increased in line with house price inflation.  Yet again, we pay more taxes under a Labour Government.
