Online Probate Applications Extended

HM Courts & Tribunals Service has confirmed that the online Probate application service that went live in August 2017, has now been extended to multiple personal applicants (it was originally just one executor).  It is still not available yet for professional advisers and solicitors (available later this year).

Criteria for Online Probate Application:

  • Maximum 4 executors appointed in the Will can make the application
  • Original will available for copy and posting (hard copies are still needed)
  • Maximum 4 changes to the Will (known as codicils).  E.g. You left yoru watch to your son and then by codicil (a letter) you have left your watch to your grandson
  • England and Wales only

What does the online probate application include?

  • Statement of Truth (you swear that you are telling the truth)
  • Online probate fee payment

What do you then need to post?

  • Original Will and two photocopies
  • Official copy death certificate
  • Associated HMRC inheritance tax forms and figures, and usually any tax bill settled (if any)
