Conservative Proposals _ Stamp Duty and IHT

Published / Last Updated on 11/11/2007

The Conservative Party has pledged to make changes to Inheritance tax and Stamp Duty, if they came into power.  They plan to increase stamp duty to £250,000 for first time buyers, which would cost the taxpayer £400million, in lost revenue.

They have also proposed to raise inheritance tax threshold to £1million.  These proposals have caused a stir.

Our view

The bottom line is that revenue will still need to be raised, the question to ask the Conservatives is where will they get it from?
